 Here's what's happening in the Wabash Valley...


Clabber Girl Corporation, Gordon Food Service and Terre Haute Savings Bank are hosting the third annual High School Chef Competition in the Clabber Girl Culinary Classroom.  Eight teams from five area high schools, Terre Haute North, South Vermillion, West Vigo, Sullivan and Rockville, have taken the challenge and the final round Friday evening.  The event is open to the public and people are asked to donate new or gently used kitchen supplies for admission. 

Val Field is accepting registrations for the 2010 Babe Ruth Baseball League season.  Forms are available at The Terre Haute Boys & Girls Club or for download at www.thbgc.org and mail to THBGC; 220 N. 3rd St.; Terre Haute, IN 47807.   Babe Ruth Players must be age 13-15 as of April 30, 2010.  If you have any questions or are interested in coaching, please contact Stan Dennany at 466-4720

The 2010 American Cancer Society Daffodil Days program is officially underway in Wabash Valley through the end of March. Daffodil Days serves as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, as well as an opportunity to bring hope to cancer patients in the area.  For a donation of $10, everyone  can send a bouquet of fresh-cut daffodils to someone special to support the fight against cancer. An important part of Daffodil Days is the Gift of Hope – a bouquet of 10 daffodil stems in a vase, delivered anonymously to cancer patients within the community.  For more information about Daffodil Days, to request daffodils or to get involved with the program, contact our local American Cancer Society office.

Paris Community Hospital/Family Medical Center Community Education Manager, will provide blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipid panel/total cholesterol screenings in the Visiting Specialty Clinic Lobby from 7-9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 9 and Thursday, March 11. The stage will come alive on Thursday and Friday evenings, March 11 and 12 at 7, as Northview High School’s Thespians present the classic musical,  “The Sound of Music”.  A cast of 30 students and as well as student musicians are eager to present this show to the public.  Seating is reserved and tickets are available by calling Northview High School 812-448-2661 ext. 1235.

 

Saint Mary’s Alter Society in Paris will host a Jonah Fish Fry, Friday, March 12th, 4:30 ‘til 7 (Central Time) at the Saint Mary’s Parish Center.  Drive Up and Carry Outs will be available!  For more information, call 217-463-1108.

Terre Haute Community Garden will host a cool season mini-open house for returning gardeners, Saturday, March 13th, 2 ‘til 4pm at the Terre Haute Community Garden, 219 North 11th Street.  There are plots available for the 2010 season.  Guidelines and registration forms can be found at the Motion and Matter event at Ivy Tech on March 20th and at the Apple House starting on March 13th.  For more information, call 812-231-7151.

 

It’s an All-you-can-eat Breakfast to benefit Brazil’s First Christian Church Youth Missions Saturday morning, March 13th, 7:30 – 9 at Applebee’s on South 3rd Street in Terre Haute. Tickets are $5, available at the door or by calling Chris Gregg 812-446-2214.

 

The Ambush Band will provide the music for the Annual St Patrick’s Day Dance at the Wabash Senior Activity Center in Terre Haute, Sunday March 14th.  The Carry-In Dinner starts at 5:30 and the dance is 6:30 ‘til 9:30.  Tickets and information, contact the Senior Activity Center, 232-7575.

 

It’s a lot of fun and it benefits the Terre Haute North Girl’s Softball League...it’s Longenbarger Bingo, Wed. March 17th at 6:00 pm in the Terre Haute North High School Cafeteria. Doors open at 5:00.  $10.00 for 20 games. Must be 18 to play. There will be free Babysitting while you play and plenty of food and door prizes.

The Clay County Literacy Coalition will hold a Tutors Workshop for Adults, March 19th 4 ‘til 6 and March 20th, 9 ‘til 5 at the Brazil Public Library.  The Workshop is Free and attendees will learn about teaching adults how to read or improve reading skills.  For more information, contact Marty Bell Mondays 11-5, Wednesdays Noon-5 or Thursdays 1-5, 812-446-1331.

 

 

Cellular One of East Central Illinois is offering $6,000 in scholarships to this year’s graduating seniors in its 11-county East Central Illinois service area. Each of the company’s 12 stores will award a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior who is a Cellular One customer or is the child or grandchild of a Cellular One customer and will attend one of the 2- or 4-year state colleges within the company’s service area.  Applications are due at the Cellular One headquarters in Danville on Friday, March 26.  For more information, contact, Colleen Wright, 217-431-6281-x1113 or 217-497-7483.

 

The Ryves Neighborhood Association “Pancake Breakfast” fundraiser will take place on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Applebee’s on South U.S. Highway 41.  Individual tickets for the event are $5, which will include all-you-can-eat pancakes, coffee, milk, juice and soda.  There will also be a special prize drawing held at the breakfast.  Tickets may be purchased at the door on or by contacting the Ryves Neighborhood Association’s office, 1313 Locust Street.

 

Kindergarten Registration for the Vigo County 2010-11 School Year is set for Friday, April 16th from 8 to 10:30 am for children five years old on or before August 1st of this year.  Registration will take place at each Vigo County Elementary School...an official birth cerificate and immunization record is needed for each child enrolling.  For more information, call 462-4228.

 

On April 18, 2010, Wabash Valley Social Service Agencies will participate in the 2nd annual Homeward Bound Walk at ISU’s Dede Plaza.  The popular event, jointly sponsored by the Indiana Association for Community Economic Development and several Wabash Valley Social Service Organizations, is expected to draw over two-hundred walkers. Proceeds from the event will be used to provide housing and supportive services for the Wabash Valley homeless.  For more information or to participate, call 812-232-1447.
